Find Your Home in Chesapeake

What’s missing in Chesapeake VA? New homes by Bishard, of course! Bishard Homes has been well respected in Virginia Beach for over 25 years, known for building high-quality homes for buyers at every budget. For our first venture outside of VB, we looked for nearby suburban areas that a new Bishard community could fit seamlessly into—and that’s how we ended up building new homes in the city of Chesapeake.

Chesapeake’s backstory

Chesapeake is a suburb just west of Virginia Beach with around 240,000 residents. Although it wasn’t classified as an independent city until 1963, the area was one of the very first to be settled in what would become the United States. The first English settlement began around 1620 along the banks of the Elizabeth River, and Norfolk County’s founding dates back to 1636.

Today, Chesapeake’s unique blend of suburban and rural areas has created a community rich in history, cultural diversity and economic development. Since 2010, its population has grown 7.4% as more people discover the perks of living in Chesapeake.

The perfect intersection of work and play

Chesapeake is a great place to live as a working professional. Its dynamic community is powered by its talented workforce, strategic location and viable resources. Residents enjoy a steady economy with an above-average job market. Major employers within city limits include the headquarters of Dollar Tree, various healthcare companies, and a regional QVC office. Additionally, Chesapeake is home to two Navy bases.

The location and accessibility also provides easy commutes to neighboring metropolitan areas. Norfolk and Portsmouth sit to the north, and Virginia Beach is just east of Chesapeake.

With its prime location, there is never a shortage of things to do in the area, and people of all ages, backgrounds and interests can find activities and amenities to suit their needs. Thanks to its historic background and diverse population, Chesapeake is home to a wide range of entertainment options, from museums to art galleries to performing arts venues. Unique cultural festivals, holiday events and food-focused fun can be found year-round.

As the 17th largest city in the U.S. by land area, clocking in at 351 square miles of unique environments, Chesapeake’s outdoor attractions feature lush forests for hiking, 22 miles of fresh and salt waterways, protected wetlands, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and more. You’re also a short drive to the Atlantic Ocean and miles of beaches in Virginia Beach.

Highly rated schools

Homes in Chesapeake are served by the highly-rated Chesapeake Public Schools (CPS). The district includes 45 schools, Chesapeake Career Center, Chesapeake Center for Student Success, and its own radio and TV stations. CPS boasts one of the highest on-time graduation rates in Virginia.
